THE STATE AGORA OF EPHESUS

The State of Agora, Ephesus

In the Roman period, the agoras, that is, the city squares, played a great role as meeting places and centers of trade.
One of these was the state agora, which was constructed on top of its Hellenistic predecessor in the first century BCE. It measures 160 by 56 metres.

This agora was renovated in the first century by the addition of government buildings. Stoas bounded the state agora on three sides.
