Cairns is a regional city located in the state of Queensland, Australia. The city itself was first formed in 1876. Named after William Wellington Cairns, the city was initially used to serve miners going towards Hodgkinson River goldfield but later declined in importance when an easier route was discovered from Port Douglas.
Later however, Cairns developed into a railhead and major port for the exportation of important products such as sugar cane, gold, precious metals. The future of the city is secured and with the city rapidly expanding with a population of an estimated 128,000, the city is reliant on its sugar and tourism industries.
The City of Cairns lies approximately 1720 kilometres away from Brisbane and further away about 2500 kilometres from Sydney by road.
