Siem Reap and The Angkor Wat Temple
Siem Reap is a province of Cambodia, located on the northwestern part of the country, on the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake.
Being the provincial capital, Siem Reap literally means the victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom of Ayutthaya
in the 17th Century. Today however, the region is most widely known for being the closest city to the popular tourist hot spot, the ruins
of the temples of Angkor with The Angkor Wat (the capital temple) being the most recognizable.
Tourist Attractions At Siem Reap
There are other interesting tourist attractions near Siem Reap such as The Angkor Thom built by Jayavarman VII, Banteay Srei, Ta Prohm,
as well as many other temple ruins. Angkor, which later would be known as Siem Reap, faced repeated invasions from the Thais. Because of that,
the city ceased to be the capital after a seven-month siege in 1431.

Siem Reap maintained its colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the Old French Quarter and around the Old Market.
In the town itself, you can find Apsara dance performances, craft shops, silk farms, rice-paddy countryside and fishing villages.
