Melbourne
Melbourne is the second-largest city in Australia after Sydney, with an estimated population of 3.7 million as of 2006. Located around Port Phillip Bay in Australia's south east coast, the city of Melbourne is also the state capital of Victoria.

History Of Melbourne
Founded by free settlers in 1835, 47 years after the first European settlement of Australia, Melbourne used to be a small pastoral settlement situated around the Yarra River. However the city transformed very rapidly into a major metropolis due to the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s.
Thus "Marvellous Melbourne" became Australia's largest,strategic and perhaps the most important city by 1865, before it was overtaken by Sydney as the largest city in Australia during the 20th century.
