History of Bukit Tinggi
During colonial times, the city was called Fort de Kock with reference to the Dutch outpost which was established here in 1825 during the Padri War.
Firstly the fort was founded by Captain Bauer at the top of Jirek hill and in the later years, the name was changed to Hendrik Merkus de Kock, named after one of the general during the Dutch East Indies.

Japanese Occupation during World War II
During World War II, in a time during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, Bukit Tinggi was used as the headquarters for the Japanese 25th Army, the force which occupied Sumatra.
