VIETNAM TRAVEL GUIDE | VIETNAM TRAVEL DIRECTORY
Halong Bay, VietnamHalong Bay is located in north Vietnam, 170 kilometres east of Hanoi. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the body of water takes up an area of about 1,500 square kilometres and a coastline spanning 120 kilometres. Located in the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay is near the China border. In the Vietnamese language, the word Halong Bay itself actually means "Bay of the Descending Dragon". There are about 1,969 limestone islands within the bay, with each of them having a rather thick jungle vegetation. These islands' view from the ocean is magnificent. Some islands have large caves in it.In the year 1288 General Tran Hung Dao prevented Mongol ships under the command of Dubhai Khan from passing through the Bach Dang River. He put up steel-tipped wooden stakes at high tide which actually causes the huge Mongol fleet to sink. During the Vietnam War, most channels were heavily used by the United States Navy for planting mines and which still pose a threat to shipping today. Halong City's surrounding land region are rich with high grade coal deposits.
