PHILIPPINES BANAUE IFUGAO TOUR

Banaue, Ifugao Tour

8-10 hours (380km) northwest of Manila are the famous Banaue Rice Terraces, reputedly the 8th Wonder of the World. Built over a period of 2000 years by the natives of the region using only the crudest wooden tools, if these terraces were put end to end, they would extend halfway around the globe.
Here the celebrated German anthropologist H Otley Beyer lived and worked on his studies of Ifugao culture. He was the first outsider to be accepted into the Ifugao society and the first person to bring the Banaue Rice Terraces to international attention.

There are quite a number of lookout points and other interesting spots among the many of village clusters. Best months to visit are March-June.

Optional extra day tour - Drive to the picturesque town of Sagada and see the famous ancient burial caves and hanging coffins, astonishing limestone formations of Sumaging Cave, and the very interesting Bontoc Museum.

Banaue Rice Terraces

The Banaue Rice Terraces or also known as Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banaue in Filipino are Philippines's 2000-year old terraces which were carved into the Ifugao mountains.
This is done mainly by the ancestors of the Batad indigenous people and has become one of the forgotten wonders of the world.

More ofthen than not, these terraces were thought to have been built using minimal equipment and mainly by hand.

Situated about 1500 metres above sea level or 5000 feet, the Banaue Rice Terraces covers an area of 10,360 square kilometers (about 4000 square miles) of mountainside.

The terraces can be found in the provinces of Apayao, Benguet, Mountain Province and Ifugao. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
