About Langkawi

Langkawi is an island archipelago of 99 islands located in Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of the northwestern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Being under the state of Kedah, Langkawi lies adjacent to the Thai border and the largest of the islands is Pulau Langkawi. The population of Pulau Langkawi is about 45,000 people and Pulau Tuba is the only other nearby inhabited island in the archipelago.
The capital town of Langkawi is Kuah which is also the administrative district. Kuah is also the largest town in Pulau Langkawi. Langkawi is known to be a duty-free island. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On 15 Jul 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee Celebration.

Pulau Langkawi
By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of some 64,792, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba. Langkawi is also an administrative district with the town of Kuah as the capital and largest town.

How To Travel To Langkawi Island

Langkawi can be reached by both air or sea. There are numerous high speed ferries which connects from the Kuah Jetty in the island to various places around the region such as to Satun in southern Thailand, Pulau Payar, Penang, Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis in the mainland of Peninsular Malaysia.
At the Awana Porto Malai harbour, which is located on the west coast part of the island, you can find Star Cruises ships docked there.

Malaysia Airlines offers flights on a daily basis to Langkawi via Langkawi International Airport. AirAsia also has connecting flights to Langkawi Island from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. SilkAir also offers flight services to Langkawi from Singapore. There is a Penang-Langkawi flight route operated by a Malaysian budget airline, Firefly airline.
