Corregidor Island is an island of the Philippines. It is a must visit island destination for anyone who is into history. Tour packages are run from the
docks in Manila (near the Philippine Cultural Center).
The gun emplacements are still there, as well as the skeletons of several buildings which signifies the evidence of war damage.
Corregidor Island used to be a checkpoint for marine vessels entering Manila Bay during the Spanish and American occupations. The island possesses a very
good geographical proximity to Bataan and due to its existing inaccurate historical writings, many tend to believe that the rock island has got something
to do with the Death March, which came shortly after the Fall of Bataan.
Today however, the island's rich history constantly draw many Filipinos and even foreign tourists alike, making Corregidor one of the most popular tourist
hot spots in the South East Asian country. The island has got some of the many historical treasures such as :-
The Malinta Tunnel
Built in 1922, Malinta Tunnel was used as an arsenal and underground hospital. Being located beneath the Malinta hill, it is served primarily for bomb-proof
headquarters for Filipino-American troops during the World War II.
The Lighthouse
Originally built by the Spaniards during the year 1836, the Lighthouse is considered one of Corregidor's oldest landmarks. Spectacular view of the Manila Bay,
South China Sea and the island itself can be seen from the Lighthouse itself.
Topside and Middleside
The remains of soldiers' and officers' barracks which includes the Mile-Long Barracks, numerous artillery batteries(eg.Battery Hearn).
President Manuel L. Quezon Park
A statue of President Quezon stands at the north entrance of the Malinta Tunnel's. This is where he was inaugurated as the President of the Commonwealth for the
2nd term at the height of the Japanese attack on Corregidor.
General Douglas MacArthur Park
A statue of the General which is located at the Lorcha Dock ruins at the Bottomside where he boarded a boat to Mindanao on March 11, 1942. From there he then
sailed to Australia where he sent his famous message: "I shall return."
Japanese Garden of Peace Park
Situated at Tailside, the park boasts a 10-foot stone Buddha, a Shinto Shrine, and various Japanese soldier memorial shrines and also some anti-aircraft weapon
relics.
Corregidor will provide more adventures and modern amenities to its travellers. Remains of barracks and artillery batteries will soon co-exist with shops, restaurants
and accommodation providers (eg.resorts).
