Onsen

Onsen are hot spring areas. Japanese go to get away, and take baths for therapeutic purposes or for relaxation. They have become extremely popular in the last decade or so with all segments of society: families, young singles and senior citizens.

Onsen inns run the same way a ryokan runs, but onsen will have large communal indoor baths (divided by sex) and often outdoor baths. rotemburo, where you may bathe among rocks and lush greenery. In remote areas, some inns have mixed bathing.
