Looping Around Tokyo
The JR Yamanote line circles central Tokyo. A complete loop takes one hour. There are two lines - one running clockwise, the other counterclockwise. Eventually you’ll arrive at your destination even if you get on the wrong one.
The Yamanote is not the fastest way around town. It makes 29 stops, but it is convenient because every station except three connects with at least one subway or train line. Since the Yamanote runs above ground, some suggest taking it all the way around to get a feel for the city. But, frankly, you won’t see much of the city because of all the buildings near the tracks.
Normally you will not wait more than a few minutes for a train. Cars get so crowded during the rush hour that some trains have cars with folding seats. During the morning rush hour, you’re not allowed to sit, which makes it easier to pack in more people.
