Arguably the junior member of the triumvirate of five stars that hangs above Pacific Place, the Marriott has always felt as if it was crammed into the site as an afterthought. However the hotel's new Fish Bar and rather unusual Lounge and Wine Bar - with 60 blended teas, a dozen different noodles, more than 200 wines and a raft of tapas - have certainly give it a much needed spruce-up. Ride the lifts to the upper storeys, and you've confronted with 602 rooms and suites - dominated by high, almost throne-like beds - with views stretching harbour-wards or up the slopes of Hong Kong island.

The outdoor pool, white on the small side, is heated throughout the winter and the health club never closes. Wireless meeting rooms make the business side of things rather easier. Certainly not first choice in this part of town, but very acceptable in the general run of things.
