It’s probably a bit late in the game, but you have to say that the E Class has finally come into its own, thought it had been a struggle to restore its luster since the SBC brake fiasco. The mid life facelift that sharpened its handling helped, but the W211 never really shed its stodgy image. Yet when you take the E230 around the block, it bears all the hallmarks as Mercedes Benz should its smooth, quiet ride is the best in the business, while its generous steering lock makes manoeuvering easy in town, and despite the age, its cabin utility easily better its rivals. As long as the drivetrain isn’t rush ( this is when things can get a little lurchy and strained ), there’s little wrong now with how the E230 behaves on the road.
Unless you’ve been hiding in a cave in the last 12 months, the new E Class is expected to debut early next year 2009, and will likely make it to South East Asia by year’s end or early 2010. But what that means is that there’s a good deal to be struck here, especially if nothing but a three pointed star would do. The W211 E Class might no longer radiate desirability, but it would be a shame to ignore what is also a thoroughly sorted premium saloon.
